you dont really need to learn an instrument.... try playing around with programs like cakewalk.... fruitty loops.... sound forge acid and you get sample of drum bit and all.....

i agree alot with JJ. I feel that arrangement plays a big part in a demo. Even though a simple arrangement will do for a demo standard. It can be quite hard to come out with a simple arrangement that is able to bring out the song. Recording knowlegde and judgement can be a difficult issue too. Well, at least that is 2 difficulties that i am facing ..... hee hee .......

I don't deny that this is a big issue for a non-instrumentalist writer.... of course tat doesnt mean you are 'handicapped' by this disadvantage. I have a few suggestion:
1. During free time, pick up a software (Like Soundforge-Acid), learn and play wif their features.... it helps... maybe you can try writting accordingly to their templates of drum or musical loops....
2. Work with a friend who can play....
3. Try to write a 'real good' piece and submit to Tinybox Publishing.... If its good, we will assist you in arrangement
4. Do not try to pick up an instrument FOR THE SAKE of song writting if you wanna excel song-writting in a short time.... time span on your 'new' instrument course might take up too much time.... for your own interests of course... by all means... take up a guitar course...
5. Call me up....

mmmb..... personally, i feel playing instrument helps in coming out with a tune. Cos' chords aids in pushing out the tune and bringing it to a climax. it also brings out the feel of the song. Chords and tune reinforce each other, i feel.... and playing instrument also helps set the rythem and for demo making, the difficult parts are doing a suitable arrangement to bring out your song and finding a good and suitable vocalist to get the feel out. (its all about feel~ ) and the standard of demo seems to be getting higher; in the past, its mostly pure piano, now we have to add in loops and more arrangements... even for ballads, not to say for hip-hop or pop for those who dun play any instruments, dun despair. Its not difficult to pick up guitar or keyboard. You can pick up basic chords playing to help in song writing very fast, and now that there are so many pop music schools (like attitude, hark, lwssom) around...

yeah i agree ^^ , i feel that knowing a certain instruments certainly helps alot cause when you 'run out of feel' while trying to write a song, playing a song which has the same feel certainly do helps a lot, i also find that singing a few songs sometimes do bring some inspiration , especially in bathroom ;D
