I would say that there is a specific requirement if you are considering to move towards the COMMERCIAL industry... if you are going something unique, very little people or company might be keen to invest in a nitche aspect of the market...
The bottom line is, are your songs 'selleable' to the bulk of Singaporeans? or Asian? Is it something commercial or its a 'my-own-style' kind of thing... Remember... it is the music business that top writers are in... thats why, commercial aspects is more important than mere artistic part of music....

The Good news is.... not everyone thinks like A&R Executive.... or rather not all A&R people have 100% A&R mindset...
I know its a Arts Vs Business thingy that we are uncomfortable.... but I think all of us still can move on to enjoy what we are creating...
ENJOY!

Wondering if u guys could help me out... me wrote quite a few chinese pop songs, maj ballads, but my frens (oso in e music industry) told me dat these r too matured for my age (16) n advised me to write something more related to my teen life, like punk rock stuff or mayb those machi didi type of songs.. cos they say i did deliver my songs well in terms of vocals, but ppl find it hard to accept if i were to enter e commercial market as the songs do not match my age... tried to heed their advice but end up writin meaningless songs, as in there's no feel in dem, jus music n lyrics..get wad i mean.. wad shld i do..

Dear offy1, There are a lot of different requests in the music industry in terms of commercial songs. Most youngsters who listens to commercial songs in the current market now are very attracted to catchy and easy to sing tunes, especially the chorus part. Words from producers in the industry indicates that major ballads are what catures the attention of the listeners now, especially students as they make up the large portion of the population pie in terms of commercial music. Songs like Xiao Wei are hits cos of its simplicity and easy to sing verses and chorus. One can say that such songs maybe be mature or even old but look at the amount of people who can sing the song, even without the music. You may not necessary follow Xiao Wei's example and write a similar tune. Do follow your feel and continue writing songs that comes from your inspirations. That's why its most original and most melodic. What is important is HOW you go about reviewing and "fine tune" your songs to make it song commercial. Music arrangement also plays a big part. Remember: GOOD SONGS ARE NOT ONLY WRITTEN BUT REWRITTEN!!! Have fun exploring!!!! ;D
